Ottawa offers to help in Elliot Lake

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has told Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty that the federal government is eager to help Elliot Lake rescue efforts in any way it can. Harper and McGuinty spoke by telephone last night.

News reports indicate the Canadian military officials are looking to see it they might be able to provide assistance.

The expertise of Army engineers might benefit rescue work.

But assistance could also come from other federal services or agencies.

To date, the Premier has not made a formal request for federal help.
