Chief sends prayers of sympathy and hope for Elliot Lake

SERPENT RIVER FIRST NATION - As the City of Elliot Lake goes through the steps of dealing with the many losses surrounding the tragedy at the Algo Mall roof collapse, Serpent River First Nation sends a message of support and condolence.

“We are deeply saddened for the citizens of City of Elliot Lake at this time and wish to send our thoughts and prayers of sympathy and hope,” says Chief Isadore Day, Wiindawtegowinini of Serpent River First Nation.

During this time, the Chief and his administration are preparing an Elliot Lake response delegation to attend a meeting with the Elliot Lake with Mayor Rick Hamilton and his control response group dealing with the tragedy that has shaken this community like no other event in its history.

“I wish to extend to the Mayor and his citizens the commitment that Serpent River First Nation is here to help shoulder this heavy burden. In speaking with the mayor this morning it is clear - he is determined to lead his people through this tragedy. I want to commend his strength and courage in dealing with this most difficult time,” says Day.

Many of the First Nation members were quick to respond to this disaster by setting up a social media site dedicated to not only morale support, but also a monetary fund to help those affected.

It is expected that today the Chief will be speaking with other First Nation leaders this week for assistance and to send prayers in vigil for the city.

There will also be a sacred fire lit for the families and friends of those affected by the collapse.

“We will be providing a number of options and supports for the Mayor and his people at this time. It is an understatement to say that the City of Elliot Lake will be dealing with this event for a very long time. I want to commit in friendship and in unity - we are here to help in any way that we can,” concluded Chief Day.
