Premier's statement on tragedy In Elliot Lake

(June 25, 2012) - Premier Dalton McGuinty released the following statement, after confirmation that a person has died in the collapse of a mall roof in Elliot Lake:

"Today, I want to join with people across Ontario to express our deepest sympathy to the entire community of Elliot Lake.

In particular, to those still waiting for news of loved ones, please know that we are thinking of you and holding you in our prayers at this time.

And to the first responders from in and around Elliot Lake, thank you for your tireless efforts since Saturday.

And on behalf of all Ontarians, I also want to thank those emergency services workers who came from across our province to assist in the rescue and recovery efforts.

When one community in Ontario is hurt, it touches us all, and we will continue to stand together to see our fellow Ontarians through this tragedy."

kamen 6/25/2012 7:19:56 PM Report

I agree, why would you leave these people in there to die, how would you like it if you were buried beneath that rubble, I hate the government....Send in some better people to deal with the situation. If we can find people buried under the twin towers, then why not a section of a mall? This is murder, straight up to leave these people here to die. I would start suing if I was a family member to the missing. Or go in there myself. You are too much to say lets pull out. there are still pockets in that rubble, and there are probably still live people in there. Get the heck back in there and find them

WHAT ARE YOU SAYING. ICANT BELEVE WHAT I AM READING. WE LET THIS GOVERMENT MAKE A STATEMENT LIKE THIS . lET THE MUNICIPALITIES LOOK AFTER THIS? WHO EVER GAVE THAT STATEMENT SHOULD BE CHARGED WITH MURDER. WHO DO THEY THINK THEY ARE TO EVEN SUGEST SUCH A THING IN A TIME AS TERRIBLE AS THIS. GET THE HELL BACK THERE AN SAVE SOME LIVES .TAKE A LESSON FROM THE AMERICANS AT THE TWIN TOWERS . THEY DIDNT WRITE PEOPLE OFF LIKE THEY WERE CHESS PIECES.COME ON CANADA.
solly101 6/25/2012 8:22:04 PM Report

do people not realize that the twin towers were both down on the ground? where as this mall is still standing but with any type of movement of the structure it can fall down and worsen the situation?

Forgive my bluntness at a time of such great disaster for our Northern community! Do you really think McGuinty gives a crap about small Northern communities if it doesn't mean votes or pats on the back for him!! Who really wrote those words of sympathy for him? ...how about showing some government funding for our 'Northern communities..'emergency services workers'..! GET THE JOB DONE!! Get those people out of there NOW!!

SHAME ON YOU MR MCGINTY. DO YOU FEEL CANADIANS ARE DISPOSABLE? iS YOUR FAMILY DISPOSABLE OR JUST THE REST OF US? THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE TO CONSIDER HAULTING THIS SEARCH UNTIL EVERY LAST PERSON IS ACCOUNYED FOR. WOULD YOU EXPECT LESS FOR YOUR FAMILY.???? ANGRY AS HELL!!!
iRme 6/25/2012 8:47:34 PM Report

solly101: I'm not an engineer but with modern technology it's not hard to figure out how to put up support beams within hours to stabilize areas of structure to save lives....

Solly only a small percentage of the Mall has been compromised. That is not to say that the wholebulding will not eventually demolished. But to give up when there was still time for some was very wrong. Emergency workers in Ontario seem to be run be risk managed bureaucrats instead of caring heroic people. They should of sent a few volunteer mine rescue men in Saturday and we would of seen rescues occur.

I am sorry, but this really makes me sick to my stomach. I would like to see the different direction government would take if this happened in Toronto, or anywhere in Southern Ontario!! You are leaving these people there to die?? I really find it hard to believe with ALL the technology in this world, and the highly paid engineers that a solution to secure the structure is not being done asap! Dalton you are screwing the taxpayers in every way possible to save a buck. It also appears as though you would sacrifice human lives to keep you and your crook party from spending anything to help!! Too bad we didn't have another election in July! Maybe then Dalton would have done something to sincerely help!! Poor Ontario!! God bless those directly affected by this.
dawgg007 6/25/2012 9:19:37 PM Report

To all of you who are calling for heads to roll, I completely understand your frustration. At hand we have complete, professional teams of rescuers who don’t seem to be doing the job of rescuing. I get that.
I just wonder how these individual heroes feel not being allowed to do their job. This must be just awful for them being trained to do a job they are NOT allowed to do. Now, let me say that I do not have a loved one missing so to many of you, this may fall under the category of “Easy for you to say” but, do we really want to add more names to the casualty list by allowing these brave people into a very ‘unsafe’ environment?
If the province, the community of Elliot Lake and, for that matter, Premiere McGuinty to allow these rescuers to enter the mall in its present condition, the officials could face criminal charges for violating workplace safety laws…even though it might be the rescuers’ job to put themselves in harm’s way.
I imagine that soon, if the condition of the mall continues on its current path, there will be more collapses and maybe then, we could find it in our hearts to say “I’m glad no one was in there when that section gave way”.
I truly hope my statements NOT offend anybody but that they may be a catalyst to the beginning of the healing process for many. May those who have loved ones missing find strength in the days and weeks to come and to perhaps forgive. To the brave rescuers who came, thank you for answering our call. And, lastly, to the leaders who have faced and will continue to face the task of making tough, unpopular decisions, may you be guided by the sense of greater good and somehow find the strength to forgive yourselves as it is unlikely much of society won’t afford you the same.

dawgg...i totally respect your opinion. I am just a little frustrated that they did not look into getting support structure beams....etc going now. Rather than leaving.

SO very very sad :(

This is not the way things should happen to innocent people.

No words can describe how upset I am over this. It's horrifying for the people trapped and their families.

Something has to be done, NOW !

I'm thinking an organized protest is needed to get the word out. This needs to go national.

You CANNOT leave those people in there !!!!!!
saultresident 6/25/2012 10:54:52 PM Report

We can pull the trapped miners out of a small hole in Chili, but we can't get these frightened people out of a mall? Leave them there to die? We can't sit back and let this happen!
sinikka 6/26/2012 6:52:14 AM Report

if my son or daughter or family member was in there i would rather die trying to save them then do what is being done. Dalton everyone appreciates your prayers but the speech you gave is better served when the rescue mission is over , not while people remain trapped.
the_mage 6/26/2012 6:27:23 PM Report

Grow some balls Dalton and get them out.
