Hughes calls for hope and solidarity after tragic mall collapse

MP says community needs to remain united as emergency crew continue efforts

ELLIOT LAKE – While the town of Elliot Lake is still recovering from Saturday’s fatal roof-collapse at the Algo Mall, local MP Carol Hughes is encouraging everyone to stay united and positive as emergency crews continue their efforts.

“The damage is extensive and many people in the area have been touched by this,” said Hughes. “Our immediate concern is the well-being of the residents of Elliot Lake.”

With frustrations rising as emergency efforts move incrementally, Hughes is urging patience with the process and especially for the professionals who are doing everything they can.

“This is such an emotional time for everyone, I can understand why so many questions are being raised,” said Hughes. “At the same time, the emergency crews have to take appropriate precautions. Ultimately, I know that everyone is behind them and believes they are doing their best.”

Hughes said the Algo Mall is a central point for the community and questions about the future of things like Service Canada, businesses that employ hundreds of people, and even the joint-constituency office she shares with MPP, Michael Mantha, will be part of the next phase as the community comes to grips with the tragedy.

“I urge people to remain patient through this difficult time,” said Hughes. “While our office there has been closed, our phone lines remain open. We will do all we can to support the families and businesses in our community as we work through this tragedy.”

Seems really suspicious, that after only 2 days, the mayor and his police captain were willing to call off the search, and have the mall demolished as soon as possible, regardless if there were anyone alive or not in the mall. I know one thing for sure, from pictures and complaints, that the ceiling leaked and after the collapse in the picture the steel beam is clearly visable, and very rusted, this leaves me to wonder, seeing the mall was ok'd by city inspectors a month prior, perhaps a honest through inspection never took place at all, except for maybe a rushed checking of a check list. Thank God the Premier of Ontario scuffled the mayor's plans, i think the building should be properly investigated, as well as the safety inspectors office, the mayor and the police chief, they certainly looked worried on TV, and i don't think it was because of the victims either, they had the look of children caught being deceitful.

The search was never "called off." The rescuers were ordered out and the search was suspended when the engineers determined the structure was unsafe.

The safety of the rescuers must be considered. If the rescuers become trapped -- or worse, killed -- because of a secondary collapse this tragedy would be far worse than it already is.

Or the rescue crew could of just admitted they needed help and some Sudbury mine rescue crew would of assessed the situation and went in with welders and riggers to temporarily shore up the escaltor and made it safe enough to keep digging , but the inexpereinced HUSR (last rescue they did was in 2003) was to proud to ask for help.
