Elliot Lake officials, OPP, tight-lipped about mall roof collapse
Sunday, June 24, 2012 by: Carol Martin
It's been 10 hours since a section of the roof of a busy shopping mall - the only shopping mall - in the City of Elliot Lake collapsed on its food court.
There is still very little information about the number and nature of possible injuries, deaths or individuals that may be missing, nor is there information about what may have caused the roof of the mall to collapse on a warm sunny afternoon in the small Northern Ontario town.
Across the region friends and families of 11,000 people in Elliot Lake worry about their loved ones and wonder what happened to bring down that section of the roof that also functioned as a parking area for mall patrons and employees.
An urban extraction team has been on site at the 30-year old Algo Mall since earlier this evening but there is still very little more information about the collapse of a section of the mall roof about 2 p.m. on Saturday.
"Police and special teams continue working at the scene," says an OPP update from 11:50 p.m. Saturday. "No further updates will be available until 7 a.m. June 24th, 2012."
The Heavy Urban Search and Rescue team has been deployed out of Toronto and is expected to arrive in Elliot Lake about 2 a.m. Sunday.
Meanwhile witness reports of injuries and possible deaths continue to circulate through Facebook, YouTube and other social media sites.
Also circulating through Northern Ontario's information sources are concerns that the part of the roof of the mall that collapsed had been showing signs of wear, including rusting girders that apparently broke during the collapse and an obvious slope to the rooftop parking area.
Earlier this evening, Elliot Lake's Mayor Rick Hamilton said that a gas leak had been confirmed in the area of the collapsed roof and that had prevented crews from entering the area for several hours after the collapse.
Emergency responders at the scene have primarily been engaged in securing the site, Hamilton said.
He said the urban extraction team would be better equipped and trained to enter the building and inspect the area of the collapse.
He also said four people were sent to hospital after the collapse of the roof on the mall.
There is no official word on the reports that there are people missing who may have been in the mall at the time of its collapse.

--having to wait that long for an extraction team? There is OPP and Fire Dept. In Elliot Sudbury and Sault!! I hope no one died waiting for help!

The Freq 6/24/2012 8:39:59 AM ReportWow. Does this remind anyone of our own Station Mall collapse a number of years ago? I hope everyone is ok.

Vmax-4 6/24/2012 11:17:31 AM ReportHitch - are you an idiot? If there is someone that the police or EMS can safely rescue they will. Heavy urban search are rescue are trained and equipped to locate and rescue people buried inside collapsed sructures.

cleanqueen 6/24/2012 11:19:23 AM ReportIt's no secret that the Mall has been an issue for several years at least. When the merchants are not renewing their lease and you find buckets everywhere to catch water leaks in an anchor store common sense would dictate that the structure has issues. Where was the building inspection report? Now maybe it will be torn down and a new mall installed for the residents who are entitled to shop in safety!
firefly42 6/24/2012 11:31:50 AM ReportI'M IN: EMS may have been there on time, but they could only help people that got out. If there are people still inside awaiting rescue, they are still waiting, and they shouldn't have to wait that long for help.
Praying for all involved.

yes, the first thing that came to mind was how lucky we were that nobody was seriously injured.
hitch 6/24/2012 12:01:34 PM ReportNo Vmax--im not the idiot here -- I know 3 quarters of the people in elliot lake and they should not have had to wait 7 hrs! I don't care what you quote--theres no need for name calling at all at a horrible event like this!
Vmax-4 6/24/2012 12:42:40 PM ReportHitch - I didn't call you an idiot, I asked you it you were one. Go back and read the rest of my post, I didn't quote anything. I was irritated by your insinuation that the OPP and EMS should be doing more. If they are capable of helping someone they will. If someone is trapped under a building then specialized equipment and training are needed to safely locate and rescue them. What is the option to waiting 7hrs? If anyone is trapped their best chance of survival is to have highly trained experts locate and rescue them. An attempt to undertake a rescue not knowing what you are doing or where the survivors are located would likely end in tragedy. We should be thankful that HUSAR even exists. My heart goes out to all who are affected by this tragedy.
hitch 6/24/2012 1:00:41 PM ReportMy earlier comparison holds true--there wouldn't be that much "rubble" to sort thru--check out how thin a layer it is from above parking to the stores beneath--a car took out the lotto booth-that is definately known!(and RIP-to the worker of that booth!)--Vmax-you were calling me an idiot! Oh well-nice--if your family or friends were involved you would be singing a different know it all tune!
