Situation worsens in Elliot Lake - rescue efforts over

Monday, June 25, 2012   by: SooToday.com Staff

Members of the rescue team have been removed from the Algo Centre Mall because, said an on-site senior official, "the structure could fall at any time without notice."

During a news conference shortly after 5 this afternoon, Bill Needles, a spokesman from the Heavy Urban Search and Rescue team, added that “the integrity of the building has [further] deteriorated.”

"The building is totally unsafe," he said.

Needles noted that "the staircase and escalator have separated from the building," adding to pressures on the weakened portion of the centre.

Responsibility for the situation now reverts to the municipality.

It's expected local authorities will arrange for the preparation of a demolition plan for approval by the Ministry of Labour.

The process would include removal of the deceased from the rubble.

Shortz 6/25/2012 6:09:36 PM Report

Soooooo....screw any survivors and just demo the building around them??

WTF??

There are people believed to be missing, and it's already been reported that there is one survivor in the rubble that can be heard tapping on the rubble.

Get the resources in and stabilize the areas where survivors could be and go get them.

What's that? Other sections of the building may collapse as a result?

Who gives a ****, the rest of the building is done for anyways. Get it done and get the survivors out!!!
Cam 6/25/2012 6:09:40 PM Report

This is so sad...there must be something that can be done...people could still be alive in there.
LAWL 6/25/2012 6:15:00 PM Report

Are you kidding? This is total crap. Get a hold of my information. I will personally go in there myself. I will take the chance. I am sure the rescue team does not want to go. Let them do their job. I have never heard of rescue teams not being able to get poeple out alive or back away from danger. If there is someone alive in there, the persons in charge are pure evil. you are just going to let the people die? Sick....
BKM 6/25/2012 6:17:44 PM Report

This is absolutely unbelievable!!! With the technology and equipment we have in this country, this is the best that we can do?
How on earth can you walk away from a site that may have survivors and say that it's time to have engineers draw up a plan for demolition?
If feel so sorry for the people of Elliot Lake.
I am ashamed of my country and my province.
somecandy4u 6/25/2012 6:20:15 PM Report

Omg, thats it?? Unbelievable. Plans for demolition with people still inside...alive. How can this be happening here in Canada? There HAS to be something that can be done for them. My prayers are with the people still inside and their families.
hitch 6/25/2012 6:22:06 PM Report

And everyone on here got mad me for the same comments? Its ridicuous to stop efforts when they heard tapping yesterday!! Is it not why people become police and firefighters? To save suvillians risking there own lives??? Why not let people go in that are willing then--have them sign a release?? Who ever made the descision would be prob not making it--if his family or friends were in there possibly--i realize the EMS prob. Want to go in but are not allowed!
LAWL 6/25/2012 6:26:01 PM Report

There are at least 20 engineers in SSM that could figure out how to get people out of there. If there is any chance of someone being alive, the rescue should not end. Could you imagine if you were trapped in rubble knowing that rescuers were not going to come? This is total insanity.
LAWL 6/25/2012 6:28:28 PM Report

Ministry of Labour may have power over employees but they have no power over volunteers.
teets 6/25/2012 6:30:40 PM Report

W.T.F. With the technology of today they cannot figure how to support the rest of the building, Jacks, airbags, beams ect.. till they can find the people still missing.... I find this hard to comprehend.
hitch 6/25/2012 6:31:24 PM Report

Like I said 2 days ago! "This is an ant-hill compared to the 911 site!" Not attemping is chicken *#$+!!!
LAWL 6/25/2012 6:31:52 PM Report

So when miners are stuck 2 miles under ground for 2 weeks, people come together and go against all odds and rescue them. So for all the posts. I am just totally shocked that this is happening in Canada.
Cam 6/25/2012 6:35:35 PM Report

Does anyone know how we could go about getting the proper people involved and get something done for the ones still in there? We can say all we want but it must be acted on!!!
Koss 6/25/2012 6:39:01 PM Report

This is a disgrace and an absolute tragedy if they don't proceed with a rescue attempt right away. Get people in there that know what they're doing.
LAWL 6/25/2012 6:45:12 PM Report

The problem Cam is that 100 people walking into an area that are unfamiliar with the situation would be deadly. The municipality needs to call in people that are willing to enter. I would seriously go right now if there was a plan in place. The people in charge need to act right away. This is more of a pissing contest atm. nobody in charge wants to be the fall guy. This is just crazy......
I'm just sayin' 6/25/2012 7:02:16 PM Report

WTF... according to what i read... "Members of the rescue team have been removed from the Algo Centre Mall because, said an on-site senior official, "the structure could fall at any time without notice." Isn't this more of a reason to act now?!?! I understand that no one wants to be the fall guy if stuff goes wrong but there are still living souls in there. In othr countries where people cared about people; these souls that are in there would have been rescued by now. With the media watching every move, people are afraid to move forward with a rescue attempt. Who is this ahole that decides that the work place is to dangerous? That's what these "heros" signed up for. Sad that people have to die because of cowards who won't do their jobs. I'm done on this isse I think. My thoughts and prayers for all who are affected by this.
Cam 6/25/2012 7:04:34 PM Report

I agree LAWL... the municipality is obviously dealing with a situation far out its experience...you would think they would have realized this and turned it over to the proper organization/government/army...it is not like the entire mall collapsed...there has to be a way in
UniqueName 6/25/2012 7:16:40 PM Report

What rescue efforts over?
What a bad title to be using.

I do believe the reporter was trying to state that the efforts for a rescue at this present momemnt is over until they can get some engineers to draw up some plans (SOON) to ensure there is no total collapse of the centre portion of the building.

If the centre collapses in on the survivors, there most likely won't be any survivers.

If the rescurers lives are at extreme danger, they will always call it off until some other plan is made. This is how its always been done for years and years and years in rescue operations.

Basically why risk the lives of others if you know it could collapse an kill them to save or potentially save others or kill the injured as well, without making a solid plan to ensure safety is there for all invlovled?

I just hope they can come up with a fast plan to ensure saftey for all involved.

I would love to go there and help out and if sootoday would like to contact me i would be willing to do so.

My prayers are for the families of all involved in this terrible disaster.
laurs 6/25/2012 7:17:16 PM Report

i never put anything on these sites as far as comments go, but after reading all of this criticism, i need to acknowledge how sad it is to judge the situation from your computer.

these men and women have been putting their lives at risk for the last 3 days to reach any survivors/victims. if you read any other information, other than what is posted on this website, you would know that this team IS the special team. these ARE who you want on your side.

it is absolutely awful what this community has endured this devastating trauma, and will continue to in the following days/months/years. pointing blame is not a resolution to anyone's grief. adding MORE fatalities to the list won't make ANYTHING better.

what we should be doing is saying our prayers, kissing our loved ones, appreciating what we have. if something, god forbid, happened like this in our town, i would hope our community would support the decisions of the brave men and women who selflessly come to help us in our time of need.

my thoughts and prayers are with the community of elliot lake, all those affected by this tragedy, and for our own community that we never have to go through anything like this.
LLE 6/25/2012 7:18:07 PM Report

Outrageous! The city calls in the prov. because they can't deal with the magnatude of the situation. The prov. has basically told them 'sorry 'bout your luck'. OMG!! There really are no adequate words.
Mr. McGuinty and friends, you'd better get your resumes updated, your going need them.
T.J 6/25/2012 7:19:42 PM Report

Shame on Elliot Lake, shame on Ontario, shame on our entire country if demolition plans begin without conducting an adequate search and rescue operation. Imagine if that was your daughter, your father in there.

This enitre situation is horrific! I could see if this was happening in a third world country without access to the resources we have. It has only been 2 days, so the possibility that there are some living souls trapped in the rubble is highly likely. Just draft up demolition plans?! Are you kidding me? Lord help us all.

The 22 injured got out themselves-when it happenedi-nobody has really went in to rescue as they were waiting for clearance--now there is no clearance--just demolition!
tommy_boi07 6/25/2012 7:39:31 PM Report

Yes, this is a tragedy. But do you people really think that if there was something that they could be doing right now that they would be doing it? People are quick to criticize without any solid facts. Emergency crews have been on the site for the last 2 days trying to make this building stable, its not like they've been sitting outside drinking coffee. It is absolutely horrible that there could be people trapped inside alive still but this is canada, if there was a way that they could continue this rescue they would. Don't be so quick to judge what's going on when people commenting don't have a clue what the actual situation is.
LAWL 6/25/2012 7:46:59 PM Report

Read the wording of the story. The rescue team was "removed". The ministry of labour is the culprit in all of this. Go crawl back into your hole and believe that everything has been done. There is always a way. There have been far worse disasters. People do no give up after 3 days. Sorry.....
hitch 6/25/2012 7:55:53 PM Report

I get my info directly from the site--i have many friends in Elliot--so I am not just assuming nothing!
LillyGirl 6/25/2012 8:42:12 PM Report

This whole situation is very terrible. I could not imagine being one of the people trapped in there. I really hope they figure something out fast, its been almost 3 days now. 3 days without food water restrooms, pain agony, being scared. The person who inspected the place a few months ago and passed should be one of the people trapped for his stupid decision. this is his fault, If he did his job the way he was suppose to, no one would be trapped, they would of shit it down, It people who worked at the mall and customers can tell its going to fall he should of been able to THATS HIS JOB. Prayers to the familys of those trapped down there. They are running out of time. You need food water to survive.
MorganDS 6/25/2012 8:48:47 PM Report

Absolutely disgusted! They can rescue miners trapped in shafts in worse situations than this and they QUIT????!!! SERIOUSLY? They can't free people from Mall debris!? So ashamed right now! They can't call in the military or someone who knows what they are doing!!
Snowdon 6/25/2012 8:53:13 PM Report

Unless you've been at the site, you are uninformed to comment.

Unless you know anything whatsoever about urban rescue, or engineering, you are uninformed.

So instead of losing your minds, try to take a deep breath and think about things rationally.

Why would they just let people die? Seriously. If you people are upset about people you've never met, why would these people, who have actually heard someone tapping, just walk away if it wasn't dangerous?

Unless you all want someone who doesn't do your job to come to your work and tell you what you should do differently?

Do you all go to fires with firemen and criticize them?
Nunavut 6/25/2012 8:55:25 PM Report

Heck the Chilean mine rescue team from a few years ago would put our Ontario bureaucratic rescue workers to shame. A disgrace is all one can say !
LAWL 6/25/2012 9:04:24 PM Report

No Snowden, we do not go to fires and criticize firemen. They actually stay until the job is done.
hitch 6/25/2012 9:04:45 PM Report

No one is saying anything about the EMS--its about the guy who shut it down so early!! I am sure the EMS people want to go in despite the danger as that is why they got into these professions! Supposedly to save lives risking your own!
BKM 6/25/2012 9:08:42 PM Report

Found this on answers.com...

A human body can survive 8-14 days without water depending on the person and how fast sweat, urine, and tears are leaving the body and up to 4 weeks without food depending on conditions like weight, temperature and exertion.

...and the "experts" decide to give up and walk away after two days. No one said it would be easy. Keep thinking and trying.

If they don't have the expertise, admit it and call in someone who does.
sweetc 6/25/2012 9:37:09 PM Report

Mudd Flapp... shut it. they search longer for a trapped dog.
MuddFlap 6/25/2012 9:58:42 PM Report

Maybe if you read other news sources you would realize they haven't given up, but are trying to figure out the safest way to proceed with a rescue. The last thing anyone would want is more casualties. The most important life is your own. Any experienced first responder knows that. The only way I would go into that building blind and with no plan or safety measures was if my son was in there. But I wouldn't lie to myself and say what I was doing was smart.
hitch 6/25/2012 9:59:43 PM Report

Nice MuddFLap!! What if your family or friends were in there? Would you be content in ending attempts this quicks? Yes we could and would get in our cars and drive there--we would be arrested at this time tho!! Once the okay and pressure is put on-THO-for volunteers there will be lots of us! There is people there right now ready to go in!
MuddFlap 6/25/2012 10:15:56 PM Report

Emotions overrule common sense when loved ones are involved. As my previous post stated if my son was in there I would probably be in jail right now from trying to go in. But he isn't. He is right here in my home with me. Once they are sure that there is no life threatening danger they might let some untrained volunteers in with shovels and buckets. By the time you see that though you are looking at recovery and not rescue. Because the powers that be aren't going to let your dumb asses in to pull the whole thing down trying to be heroes.
hitch 6/25/2012 10:21:38 PM Report

As we speak--they are going back in!! As soon a mine rescue was called then toronto decided to go back in with them!! They are going in at least to re-assess!!!
candio21 6/25/2012 10:24:57 PM Report

So they are just going to let the trapped person/people die of dehydration and in pain. It is a very sad day.
Eduardo 6/25/2012 10:48:05 PM Report

surely there must be something they can do, why doesn't everyone just grab a piece of debris and keep grabbing, take the debris away from the building, there must be enough people to do this, just start and keep going, what the hell is going on, does anyone know what they are doing?
