Statement on rescue operations in Elliot Lake

David Orazietti released the following statement today on rescue operations in Elliot Lake:

The prayers of all Ontarians have been with residents of Elliot Lake since the roof collapse of the Algo Centre Mall this past weekend.

Yesterday afternoon, we learned from authorities on the scene that the remaining mall structure remained unstable and that rescue efforts could collapse further, posing serious danger to the rescue team.

Yesterday evening, the Premier spoke directly with Emergency Management Ontario and the Heavy Urban Search and Rescue Team and asked them to determine whether there were any possible means to reach victims without endangering the lives of rescuers.

The rescue operation continues today and new rescue tactics and equipment are being deployed.

The Premier and the Prime Minister are working together to support rescue operations.

It is my expectation that every effort will be made and all available resources will be used to help anyone affected by this tragedy.

We all remain hopeful that the rescue team will be able reach victims of this terrible incident and that any survivors will be reached quickly as the search continues.

It is my hope our local governments and local first responders learn from this event. So many mistakes has been done.
In every major city we need a Crane or escavator such as the one now in Elliot Lake, .To have one shipped from the south is just not good enough in an emergency such as this.Have a ground crew, lets say a crew from a local private owned construction company maintianing the machine. Then when needed that heavy machinery can be deployed rapidly to the emergency.Have 1 in the Sault, Sudbury and Thunder bay . Takes a lot of travel time to get that to the North from the South. As for a driver well the driver can be airlifted to the scene by Helicopter and the crane ready to rock and roll when the operator gets there. It is clear we need that type of equiptment here in the north. We do not need many of them but we need a few in case of.
