Premier's statement on Elliot Lake mall collapse

Today the Premier issued this statement following the collapse of the roof of the Algo Mall in Elliot Lake:

I want to thank our emergency crews in Elliot Lake as well as those that have come from southern Ontario to help with the rescue effort for their good work around the clock.

I spoke with Mayor Rick Hamilton this morning.

As we anxiously wait to learn more about anyone thought to be missing in Elliot Lake, our thoughts and prayers are with their families, and also with those who have been injured and indeed with the entire community.

During a crisis like this, I am reminded of the strength and resilience of Northern Ontarians, and how by pulling together with our friends, families and neighbours, we can get through these difficult times.

Statement by MPP Mike Mantha on the Elliot Lake mall roof collapse

I was shocked and horrified when I heard the roof-top parking lot outside of my constituency office crashed through two floors of the shopping centre.

As professionals engage in a rescue efforts, I am inspired by the spirit of this community as we confront this tragedy.

I want to thank all the first responders, emergency personnel and specialists, and Mayor Rick Hamilton who were on site so soon.

I will be working closely with the Mayor, emergency crews and the provincial government to ensure those affected by this tragedy gets the assistance they need.

My thoughts and prayers are with those who are missing and injured during this tragic event.

Statement by NDP Leader Andrea Horwath on the roof-top parking collapse in Elliot Lake

Last night, I heard some of the details of the tragic building collapse in Elliot Lake from MPP Michael Mantha.

There will be time soon to examine what happened and why, but right now our priority has to be protecting people's lives and health and ensuring the immediate disaster relief this community needs.

Elliot Lake is facing an incredible tragedy with determination, hard work and resolve.

We can all be inspired by how they have pulled together in this unbelievably trying time.

Let's get behind them now and provide the help they need.
