The smiles on their faces said it all on Friday night. The Soo Greyhounds took one step towards breaking out of a slide that saw them lose eight out of their previous ten games on Friday night.

The Sault College Cougars split a pair of Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) games on home court Friday night against the Fanshawe Falcons.

The Girls High School Basketball League continued on Thursday with five games throughout the city. At Sir James Dunn, the Eagles swept the Bawating Braves by scoring a 52-35 win in the junior division and a 47-33 victory in the senior contest.

Things just have not been going the right way for the Soo Greyhounds of late. After returning home from an 0-3 road trip, the Greyhounds dropped a tough 2-1 decision at the hands of the Saginaw Spirit on Wednesday night at Memorial Gardens.

Sault Ste. Marie native Ron Francis will have his number retired by the Carolina Hurricanes in January. Francis retired as the fourth leading scorer in National Hockey League history and second all-time in assists.

Freshman Josh Sim scored his first collegiate goal to help Lake Superior State salvage a 1-1 tie in Game 2 of its Central Collegiate Hockey Association series.
