Sudbury mayor recalls working with Mayor John

************************* Statement by Mayor John Rodriguez on the death of John Rowswell, mayor of Sault Ste. Marie

Northern Ontario shares a tremendous loss today.

Mayor John Rowswell was an inspirational and visionary leader, not just for his own community, but for all of Northern Ontario.

His commitment to alternative energy, his tireless efforts to develop polar air cargo transportation, and his determination to maximize the value of the Sault border crossing will all have lasting benefits for Northerners.

Mayor Rowswell played an important role in the Northern Ontario Large Urban Mayors partnership group.

His sage advice and the depth of his knowledge were invaluable assets in that forum.

The five mayors in this group have built a strong bond over this term and I know that my colleagues, Mayor Vic Fedeli, Mayor Tom Laughren and Mayor Lynn Peterson will share in the sadness of this tragic loss.

On a personal note, I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed John's intellectual insights and our conversations about the future of our region.

We share a passion for building our respective cities and a commitment to keep our eyes on the horizon, creating a solid vision for the future of our communities.

I considered John a friend and a colleague and I was looking forward to conveying my respects to him personally at a community tribute dinner tomorrow in Sault Ste. Marie.

On behalf of the members of Council and all of the citizens of the City of Greater Sudbury, I offer my condolences to the people of Sault Ste Marie.

Our collective thoughts and prayers are with John's family today.
