COVID-19: Here's the situation in the Sault today

Public Health Ontario has reported 111 new confirmed cass of COVID-19 today. This marks the lowest number of new cases reported in a day since March 25.

The last case in Algoma was reported on June 19. There are currently no known active cases in the region.

No new cases in Algoma region today

Here are the latest COVID-19 numbers from Algoma Public Health, updated at 9:30 a.m., June 26, 2020: 

  • 12,455 tested
  • 24 positive
  • 11,617 negative
  • 814 pending
  • 0 deceased
  • 24 resolved

Total confirmed cases by area of residence: 

  • 19 in Sault Ste. Marie and area, with evidence of community spread
  • 2 in central and east Algoma
  • 3 in Elliot Lake and area
  • 0 in north Algoma

Algoma Public Health's website indicates that pending and negative cases were last updated on June 17.

City hall to reopen to the public on Monday

After months of being closed to the public due to COVID-19, the Civic Centre will be reopen to the pubic as of Monday. But only with limited services.

GoodLife Fitness not opening as planned in Ontario

Goodlife Fitness gyms in Ontario will not be opening on June 29 as the organization originally announced. 

Gyms in Ontario are still waiting for government approval to open their doors due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

Sault College students, faculty will be subject to COVID-19 contact-tracing

Sault College will reopen its doors to some of its students and faculty in a handful of programs Monday, July 6 with a great deal of COVID-19 precautionary measures in place.

Staff and students will face a passive screening process upon arrival at the college, be expected to practice physical distancing and use PPE (ranging from non-surgical masks to working behind plexiglass barriers).

Along with the controlled entry point, there will be card access only for those individuals, information on the card to be used for contact tracing in case someone does catch the COVID-19 virus. Only those studying or delivering instruction in a limited number of programs will be allowed on campus during the period starting July 6.

Closure of police resource centre leaves hole in services, says John Howard official

The Neighbourhood Resource Centre on Gore Street has been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and this means that many people are struggling to access services through organizations such as the John Howard Society.

Sault police spokesperson Lincoln Louttit has said there is no timeline in place for reopening.

Parking fees at hospital to start again July 6

After a break from parking fees during the COVID-19 pandemic, patients, visitors and staff will once again have to pay for parking at Sault Area Hospital (SAH) beginning Monday, July 6. SAH made the announcement on its Facebook page Thursday.

Breakfast program still a go despite COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has not stopped the city from feeding youth in our community.

The Every Breakfast Counts committee has announced that summer programming will begin this coming Monday and will run for eight weeks. The goal is to deliver 3,300 meals weekly.

Hub Trail Festival changes format to accommodate physical distancing guidelines

The annual Hub Trail Festival, which is usually held on Canada Day, will now take place throughout the entire month of July.

In light of COVID-19 and restrictions placed on gatherings, the 2020 Hub Trail Festival will expand to include a month-long scavenger hunt, giving participants plenty of time to complete the scavenger hunt while following physical distancing guidelines.

The Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore has cancelled their draw, which was to take place this past Wednesday.  

They plan to announce a new draw date when it is safe to do so.

Not the sort of people to sit still during an economic downturn (this one caused by COVID-19), three Sling-Choker employees have stepped forward to volunteer their time and efforts to help (and ultimately save) an Algoma district Meals on Wheels program.
