"Take two Aspirin and call me next week," Garden River's Ted Nolan quipped Saturday after receiving an honourary Doctor of Laws degree from Algoma University College.

Nolan (shown being congratulated by Laurentian University president Dr. Hermann Falter) was recognized for his achievements in both the NHL and OHL, as well as his commitment to the community.

Here's what AUC officials said about 'Doctor' Ted:

"Ted Nolan is this year’s recipient of the Honorary Doctor of Laws. Nolan, known for his career as a hockey coach in both the OHL and NHL, is a member of the Order of Ontario and a past recipient of the prestigious Aboriginal Achievement Award. Hailing from Garden River First Nation, Nolan is well known for his work with Canadian Native Youth, and travels across the country as a speaker through the Native National Role Model Program. Algoma University College is proud to honour Ted Nolan for his achievements and commitment to the community."

Acceptance speech

In his acceptance speech, Nolan emphasized the importance of perseverance.

"Quitting is easy. Anyone can quit," he told the graduating class of 165 students, the largest in AUC's 35-year history.

"You've got to learn to win with what you've got, or you won't win at all," the former NHL coach of the year said.

Afterward, Nolan told SooToday News that he has no immediate prospects for further NHL coaching work, since the New York Rangers awarded their head coaching position this week to Bryan Trottier.
