Greg and I send our most heartfelt condolences. Jean was a lovely lady and she and John attended many of our family’s functions. We considered them extended family. Ivy (Sokoloski) Strom

Teachers pay for their pension; currently they pay over 12% of their pay and like every other large pension fund, there’s a team of people who manage it and teachers have no control or voice about how this is done. Teachers are required to have 4-5 years of university education to step into a classroom and have a starting salary of less than $40K. People working in business with the same amount of education and work experience earn much more money than a teacher. This current impasse is about the government wanting to strip working conditions but also ask for more. Teachers are skilled at handling a group of students but they aren’t miracle workers... it’s hard work and class size matters. Classrooms aren’t like they used to be; there’s more teacher interaction needed as students have choice and a voice in their learning. It’s no longer a one size fits all approach, and it was working! Higher grad rates than ever before and supports to help those students who needed it.

Congratulations to Nick Brash on organizing the first Ultra Trail Stokely Creek, a day of trail running at Stokely Creek Lodge and on Algoma Highlands Conservancy property and surrounding private lands in Goulais River. About 150 runners ran 5 km, 15 km, 32 km, 55 km or 83 km trail runs. The run was capped at 150 and there were people on a wait list. Every run except the 5 km involved running up King Mountain, possibly the highest peak in Algoma, and 3 runs also included running up the Robertson Cliffs. The views of the fall colours from King Mountain and the Robertson Cliffs were spectacular. This is going to be an annual event. Nick is very deserving of this award.
