Here's what they said about Soo Mill and Lumber Company at yesterday's award presentation:
************************* Congratulations to Soo Mill and Lumber Company.
Soo Mill was founded in 1915 by Fremlin Hollingsworth and is currently in its third generation of ownership.
A leading building supplier in the Algoma district, the company has stores in Sault Ste. Marie and Elliot Lake, as well as a roof truss manufacturing plant in the Sault.
The company currently employs almost 90 full time and close to 30 part time employees, the safety of which is of upmost importance to the company and its management.
The company has a clear and concise set of health and safety principles which state that every employee has a right to a job which is safe to do, and that every employee has a duty to work safely and promote safe working conditions, safe work practices and positive attitudes toward accident prevention.
In an industry where workers are often required to work offsite, these guiding safety principles translate to worksites away from the main Soo Mill store.
The company employs a number of health and safety programs including: tailgate reviews, regular workplace safety inspections and an accident / incident reporting system.
In 2009, 26 staff received 20-year safety awards, 1 received their 15-year award, another 4 received 10 year-awards and 7 received 5-year awards.
Congratulations once again to Soo Mill and Lumber Company for their efforts in improving heath and safety and for being named the recipients of this year’s Safe Work, Sound Business Award.
