As of 7:30 p.m. today, Sault Ste. Marie City Police was still involved in an apparent stand off at a multi-unit residence on Dennis Street near Queen Street.

City police officers are also in the midst of an investigation into the robbery of a Queen Street store just a few hundred feet from the location of the building they are interested in.

But they aren't saying if the two are related.

People in the area are saying it was Savoy's Jewellers that was robbed but police are not yet confirming what business or businesses were robbed or releasing any of the details surrounding the robbery.

"There is information that some shots were fired," said Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Detective Inspector Romano Carlucci this evening. "We're still trying to confirm if that is true or not."

Carlucci also said the robbery occurred at about 5 p.m. today but it is too early in the investigation to release any other details.

He said police have not yet made an arrest in relation to the robbery.

Police closed Dennis Street shortly after 5 p.m. to secure a residence of interest to them and to wait for judicial authorization to enter the residence.

People at the scene said they saw at least two people escorted out of the building separately and removed from the scene in different police vehicles.

One of those people appeared to be in restraints.

"We have information that is leading us to this address and that is all I can tell you at this point," Carlucci said.
