Murder charges laid in cemetery slayings (9 photos)

Speaking to reporters this morning at the entrance to Greenwood Cemetery, Sgt. Jane Martynuk of City Police disclosed that a man will face two charges of murder after he was found in the cemetery in the vicinity of two bodies discovered there shortly after 4 a.m.

The man was apprehended in the area where the bodies were found by police without incident, Martynuk (shown) said.

"He is in custody at the City Police Station and the paper work is still happening and at some point he will be remanded to bail court," said Martynuk.

Four divisions from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service are currently at the scene searching for evidence.

"This is the general area where the bodies as well as the accused were locacted and we are currently searching the area for forensic evidence," she said.

The identities of the deceased are not known, and the name of the charged male will not be released until the bodies have been identified and next-of-kin notified.

"We are in a situation where two bodies were discovered by our officers and there is an investigation ongoing," Martynuk said. "The scene has been secured and the Forensics Unit is working very closely with our Investigative Services Unit."

Also on the scene at this time are Sault Ste. Marie Police Forces officers from Patrol and Emergency Services units.

Martynuk said the investigation is too preliminary to be able to tell if other forces will be called in to assist.

She also said that no details about the deceased, the crime scene, or the suspect could be released until the investigation has advanced.

Police have now extended crime-scene tape around all of Greenwood Cemetary.

Martynuk said she expects a statement about the incident will be released later today.
