NEWS RELEASE

ALGOMA RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY HOSPICE ********************** Sault MP to host hospice fund raiser and Sault networking event in Ottawa

An upcoming event in Ottawa will bring together former and current Sault Ste. Marie residents as well as raise some money for a Sault charity.

Sault Ste. Marie MP Tony Martin announced that he will host the Friday, May 26 Sault gathering at the National Press Club in Ottawa.

Since 1975, former residents of Sault Ste. Marie, now living in the area of the National Capital, have been gathering at social gatherings hosted by the Member of Parliament for the Sault.

The May event will have the extra dimension of being a fundraiser for the Algoma Residential Community Hospice capital campaign, according to Martin, a very important project that has been 20 years in the making.

Also, representatives from some Sault Ste. Marie community organizations, agencies and companies have expressed interest in attending the Ottawa event in an effort to establish or renew connections with former Sault residents to bring them up to date on opportunities here.

A delegation from ARCH will travel to Ottawa for this occasion and will assist the organizing committee in Ottawa, as well as pay visits to some hospices in the area.

The Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH) will provide a home away from home where dying individuals will receive compassionate end-of-life care in a setting of warmth, care and palliative expertise.

The hospice will be a haven for persons approaching the end of life who can no longer be cared for at home and do not require the high tech care of an acute care hospital.

The residential hospice will help people die peacefully while assisting families to care for and cope with impending loss of their loved ones.

It is also committed to helping dying persons to live fully until they die.

Ottawa organizers expect between three and four hundred people to show up at the Press Club for this event, which will feature door prizes and a silent auction table of gifts donated by Sault Ste. Marie businesses.

Vans will be travelling from Sault Ste. Marie to Ottawa on Thursday and Friday.

Anyone interested in obtaining a seat on either, should contact Joanna Dowdall, office manager at ARCH (705-942-1556); these seats will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

The May 26 event starts at 7 p.m. and there is a $10 admission fee.

Dowdall says, "ARCH is delighted to have this opportunity to meet with present and former residents of the Sault in Ottawa, many or most of whom have relatives here or may be planning on retiring here, so this community effort will be important to them. We are thankful Tony Martin and the volunteer Ottawa organizing committee who are working on creating this event on May 26 and that we have been given the opportunity to receive the proceeds from it.

"The support from the community has been very encouraging and we are hopeful other community organizations and businesses will be able to benefit from the event as well by making contact with Sault people in Ottawa. This is part of the community partnership approach that ARCH is all about."

The Ottawa organizing committee is updating lists from previous gatherings in Ottawa but those with friends and relatives who may not be aware of the gathering can email their names to [email protected] or phone the office of Tony Martin in Sault Ste. Marie (705-941-2900) to be added to the invitation list.

Any local firms which wish to donate prizes to the Hospice fundraiser, should call the Algoma Residential Community Hospice office in Sault Ste. Marie at 705-942-1556.
