Sault Police nab man wanted under Canada-wide warrant

Jonathon Morningstar was wanted by police for breach of a statutory release, says Sault Ste. Marie Police Service spokesperson

A man who was taken into custody by Sault Police on Thursday was not the person they were looking for, but as it turned out he was wanted under a federal warrant.

Jonathon Morningstar was wanted by police for breach of a statutory release, said Lincoln Louttit, spokesperson for the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

He was taken into custody during an incident Thursday in which police were looking for a man with a weapon in the area of Chapple Avenue and Albion Street.

Louttit said Morningstar was not the man they were looking for, but was taken into custody on McNabb Street very close to the scene of the police search.

Asked if Morningstar may have thought the police were in the area to arrest him and not somebody else, Louttit responded, "you would have to ask Mr. Morningstar."

According to information released to media by the Ontario Provincial Police's Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) squad in January, Morningstar "is known to frequent the Algoma and Sault Ste. Marie area, as well as the cities of Oshawa and Peterborough."

He was arrested in 2016 when Peterborough and Toronto police arrested more than 20 individuals and associates with the GTA crime gang known as the The Ugly Crew.

Morningstar was 28 years old at the time of the January news release by the ROPE squad.

Morningstar was serving a four-year, six-month sentence for numerous offences, including possession of a narcotic for the purpose of trafficking and assault causing bodily harm.

Louttit said Morningstar remains in police custody as of 3 p.m. Friday.
