Community Builders Awards: Joanie McGuffin is a humble water warrior with a huge heart

This year’s Hall of Fame Award winner inspires others to advocate for and enjoy the natural environment

Joanie McGuffin is a local author, adventurer and entrepreneur.

She and her husband, Gary, have published eight photographic and paddling instruction books with the goal of encouraging others to travel safely and respectfully in nature.

Joanie is the founder and executive director of the Lake Superior Watershed Conservancy (LSWC), an international, Sault Ste. Marie-based non-profit organization that acts as the lead steward organization of the Lake Superior Water Trail and maintains several land trust preserves.

Joanie has worked to support healthy waterways, wild places and vibrant communities around Lake Superior through conservation, education and active participation for over 30 years.

She has dedicated her life to preserving the lands and waterways in our area, securing funds to purchase and rehabilitate lands for community use and motivating citizens to get involved in nature.

A steadfast advocate for long-standing change and protecting natural resources, Joanie’s endeavours have undoubtedly helped to sustain a healthy Lake Superior watershed for future generations.

She has proven to be a leader by inspiring people to reconnect with, respect and preserve the natural world: Not only in our community, but beyond.

The Hall of Fame Award is presented to an individual or a group that has had a significant impact on the community.

Congratulations, Joanie!
