Community Builders Awards: Jim McAuley’s entrepreneurial, philanthropic spirit lives on

Jim McAuley was integral to the establishment of the Soo Greyhounds

Jim McAuley, a successful businessman, developer, philanthropist and volunteer, passed away in November 2020, but his legacy remains strong in Sault Ste. Marie.

It was Jim’s influence and advocacy that acquired the rights for the city to get an OHL team in 1972, and he supported the Soo Greyhounds for the rest of his life, serving as president for over 20 years.

Jim helped run his family’s oil business, invested in property and businesses locally and regularly made financial donations to Sault Area Hospital, Algoma University, Sault College and many more local institutions and charities.

Truly dedicated to bringing out the best in our city, he was also a steadfast volunteer with the Kiwanis Club and the Chamber of Commerce, among other local organizations that strengthen our community.

Jim was a man who positively impacted generations of current and future leaders of the Sault and through those leaders, his legacy lives on.

The Legacy Award honours an individual posthumously who has created lasting change and measurable difference in our community through commitment and perseverance. This award pays tribute to the individual’s leadership, vision and ongoing legacy.

Thank you to the friends and family of Jim McAuley who put together a nomination package in his honour.

This award is proudly sponsored by Algoma Steel Inc.
