Community Builders Awards: Asima Vezina fosters economic development in Sault Ste. Marie

Winner of this year’s Economic Development category, Asima Vezina, has contributed significantly to education and job development in our community

Asima Vezina is a true leader in the education sector and the impact of her dedication to Algoma University has brought significant job development to the Sault Ste. Marie area.

During her time as President at Algoma U, the university has undergone a period of significant transformational change, experiencing record enrolment growth, new academic and research program development and multi-million dollar investments to support new capital infrastructure and strategic institutional priorities, including extensive development of campus facilities and programming.

This has hugely benefited the students of Algoma U, but it has also helped to drive economic development and innovation for the region.

Under her leadership, Algoma’s annual economic impact on the community has grown by almost 20 per cent, from just over $80 million to $99 million per year. Algoma U currently supports over 1,200 jobs and one out of every 28 jobs in Sault Ste. Marie is a result of Algoma U.

Asima has also forged and strengthened partnerships with key community groups such as local school boards, the city and local First Nation and Métis communities.

She is a champion for regional economic development, especially as it relates to the role the university sector plays as drivers of economic development and innovation and leaders of social and cultural change.

While many other organizations have been forced to lay off staff to address financial challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Algoma University has maintained 100 per cent of its employees, and this employee base continues to grow.

Asima Vezina embodies leadership and is responsible for ensuring that Algoma University is positively contributing to our local and regional economy.

The Economic Development Award is presented to an individual who has had an important impact on the economic well-being of our community.

Congratulations, Asima!
