VIDEO: Should city scrap old-school parking meters in favour of mobile app?

City Hall staffers want to get rid of all parking meters and pay-and-display machines in town as Sault drivers become more comfortable with Passport parking app. Is this a smart move?

As SooToday reported last weekend, staff at City Hall are pushing to get rid of all parking meters and pay-and-display machines in town as Sault drivers become more comfortable with the mobile Passport parking app.

"In some municipalities they have done away with paper passes, coin meters and pay-and-displays altogether," said a report prepared by Brent Lamming, the city's director of community services. "It is the recommendation of staff that in future all pay-and-displays and coin meters will be removed gradually as the public becomes more comfortable with the Passport technology.”

Not surprisingly, a lot of people aren’t thrilled with the idea. How will seniors park downtown if they don’t have a smartphone?

SooToday took to the streets to ask locals what they think of a city without parking meters.
