Sara McCleary Ward 4

SooToday asked each of the candidates to submit a bio to introduce themselves to voters. Meet Ward 4 candidate Sara McCleary:

A lifelong Saultite, I’ve shown my dedication to the community and now I'm ready to take my community service to the next level.

Having completed an honours BA in History from Algoma University, I went to Queen’s University in Kingston to complete a master’s degree, also in History. Once that degree was completed, I returned to the city I love. Since then, I’ve also completed a Business Foundations Certificate at Sault College.

Today, I work as the Marketing & Fundraising Coordinator at St. Vincent Place as well as working as a local reporter and columnist. These positions have given me deep insight and helped me to become truly in touch with the pulse of the community.

I also volunteer with several organizations and groups, including Refugee705, the Municipal Heritage Committee, La’ad Canada, and We’ve Got This, the nonprofit I co-founded to help fight the stigma surrounding addictions and mental illness.

My husband and I are raising our two young children in the Sault, and that is much of my reason for running for City Council - I want my children, and every other child in the Sault, to grow up in a city they are happy to call home, and to have the same opportunities as those in other cities to be happy, healthy, and successful. In short, I want to give our youth a reason to stay here.

More than anything I believe our city, and those elected to represent it, have become stuck in a rut. I want to be your new Ward 4 City Councillor to bring my voice and ideas to the table to help pull our city out of this rut and truly represent the people of Sault Ste. Marie and Ward 4.
