SooToday asked each of the candidates to submit a bio to introduce themselves to voters. Meet Ward 3 candidate Matthew Shoemaker:

Matthew was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie. Locally, he attended Notre-Dame-des-Écoles elementary school, St. Mary’s College high school, then obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and History at Algoma University. At Algoma U, Matthew was elected to the Student Union and was proud to participate in the pursuit of independence for Algoma University from Laurentian University.

After his undergraduate, Matthew attended the University of Ottawa where he obtained his law degree. Matthew was grateful to have received academic awards at both Algoma U and uOttawa.

Despite having gone away for school, Matthew was intent on returning to Sault Ste. Marie upon completing my legal studies. Fortunately, he was able to do so when he was offered a position at the Wishart Law Firm, where he’s worked since 2012.

Being committed to his community, Matthew ran for City Council om 2014 so that more people can return home to serve the Sault in whatever capacity they are able to. He is honoured to have been elected in 2014 and has spent this term aggressively promoting new ideas at City Council. He is hopeful to be able to get the chance to continue providing Ward 3 and Sault Ste. Marie this same commitment for the upcoming term.

He and his wife, Jenna, were married in 2015. In 2018 they welcomed their first child, a son named Hudson, to the world. They all live in the Sault with their West Highland Terrier named Maple.

Matthew is fluent in English, French and Italian.
