SooToday asked each of the candidates to submit a bio to introduce themselves to voters. Meet Ward 3 candidate John Bruno:

Born and raised in Sault Ste Marie, John is the second child of immigrant parents.  A graduate of St. Mary’s College, he has a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Western Ontario and Algoma University College, a Bachelor of Education from Nippissing University and a Master of Education degree from Northern Michigan University.  

He began his working career at Algoma Steel and the Sault Ste Marie Transportation Commission.  He later began his career as a teacher in 1982.  During his 37 year career in education, he was progressively promoted to vice-principal, principal, and ended his career as Superintendent of Education.  

As an educator, he was actively involved in coaching various sporting teams at the schools.  He was President of the Catholic Principal Council and a Director of the Ontario Catholic Supervisory Officers Association.  

John was Chair of the Joint Staffing Committee and lead negotiator for OECTA and Principal/Vice Principal contracts.  He handled staffing, and labour-relation issues for all employees. In this capacity he worked with various Ministries including the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Labour.  

As well, John has contributed to the community as a member of many boards, most recently, as Past Chair of the Sault Ste Marie Police Services Board.  In 1992, he received the Commemorative Medal, on the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada, in recognition of his significant contributions to fellow citizens, his community, and Canada.  

John is married to his wife Cecilia and they have a daughter, Ida.
