In 2021, the Sault Cycling Club, a local non-profit aimed at cycling advocacy and programming in Sault Ste. Marie secured funding to build a new trail system near Finn Hill.

The proposed trail system is just one of several major developments to increase and promote the city as one of the best bike towns west of the Rockies. Local bike shop co-owner Brad Phaneuf of Algoma Bicycle Co. is happy to see extensive growth in the cycling community over the past few years.

Established in 2008, Algoma Bicycle Company is proud to service Sault Ste. Marie and the surrounding area. Phaneuf’s approach to bike sales and service is no-fuss and pressure-free, instead focusing on offering customers detailed expert advice to help them find their new bike.

In the recent past, bikes have been harder to come by due to ongoing product shortages and shipping delays that started with the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, Phaneuf notes how availability of bikes and bike parts is on the rise.

“For the past few years, sales have been difficult because we didn’t have enough stock to meet demand,” said Phaneuf. “But this year, we’re well stocked with bikes, parts and accessories.”

Algoma Bicycle Company also offers fast service completed by skilled mechanics.

All staff members at Algoma Bicycle are professionally trained mechanics, who can offer expert insight into the best options for service or parts; or detailed advice to help you find your next bike.

Maybe you’ve already got a bike or two at home that just need a tune-up. They offer seasonal bike tune-ups starting at $70 plus tax, which covers everything from the brakes to the gears.

Booking an appointment for your tune-up is typically the fastest way to get your bike back, as Algoma Bicycle Company can usually get you back riding again within one day of your appointment date.

People interested in learning how to do more maintenance on their own bikes should regularly check their website. The shop plans to offer courses covering the aspects of basic bicycle maintenance throughout the summer, but spaces will be limited so that the mechanics can spend one-on-one time with each participant. Be sure to register early so you don’t miss out.

“New bike day is a happy day for anyone getting one, so we get to see a lot of smiles here,” says Phaneuf. “Some people are completely new to it, and it’s neat to see them progress through the years into cycling.”

Whether it’s an adult upgrading their bike, or a child getting to pick out their first junior bike, Phaneuf says the best part about owning a bike shop is watching riders fall in love with cycling.
