Saying goodbye is never easy, and planning a memorial service that encompasses a life well-lived can be a daunting and overwhelming task. Often, in the weeks or months following the service, clients find themselves thinking “I wish I would have asked about…”.

Joni Cooke, Manager of Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel offers the answers to some questions you may have about planning a heartfelt and truly personal send-off:

How can I “personalize” a meaningful and memorable service for my loved one?

We believe that offering flexibility with viewings, services and burials shows that it’s not about us, it’s about the family. We put our pen down and listen, because the smallest detail can create the largest impact.  What is that one unique aspect that all will recognize about the deceased as they enter our doors? We have had everything from life sized cows to a football fans stadium recreated and there may be sadness and tears, but it feels really good to see smiles and sharing of memories.

What about hair, makeup and wardrobe?

Our funeral directors always ask for a photo to help ensure your loved ones’ appearance is a beneficial lasting vision.  We fix the hair and apply makeup as needed, or a client may bring in a stylist or cosmetician. Clothing is a personal choice and should reflect what you are used to seeing them in. Uniforms can either be worn by the deceased, or placed on display.

Appearance is important to your establishment, but is there flexibility on the coffin or urn?

Occasionally a family may wish to provide their own casket or urn and this is acceptable, however, it is advised that they consult a funeral professional well in advance of the death to ensure they have a guideline of measurements and suitable materials and possible liabilities. We offer urns in many shapes, sizes and materials with custom engraving to suit nearly every reflection of a loved one. There are also biodegradable urns (for water or earth interment) which is appealing to those choosing a greener method of final disposition. At Eternitystouch.com you’ll find a variety of keepsake items that incorporate your loves one’s fingerprint or cremated remains.

Are there rules as to what can be included in the coffin during burial or cremation?

Leaving notes, letters, messages, photos and other small symbolic tokens in the casket is reassuring to the family that they are giving their loved ones something meaningful.  There is not a limit per se, however there are some items that cannot be cremated as it would be damaging to the crematorium.

May I hire our favourite caterer or serve alcohol at the service?

Weaving favourite foods and beverages along with music can ease the sadness, and help ensure your loved one’s memories will always live in our hearts and minds.  Catering at the funeral home is an option, and alcohol can be safely arranged (this can take a little additional time).  We can also arrange a catered meal delivered to a family home for those wanting something more intimate, and there is an option to have a food sympathy basket or meal delivered to the family in lieu of a floral tribute.
