Walleyes pay off for fisheries students

SAULT STE MARIE, MICH. - Lake Superior State University Fisheries and Wildlife Management students Sarah McNichol (l) and Carrie Coy have landed two of only six $750 scholarships from Lower Michigan’s Saginaw Bay Walleye Club (SBWC).

The club is one of dozens from throughout the Midwest that come to the St. Mary’s River every August for the Michigan Walleye Tour (MWT). The LSSU Fisheries & Wildlife Club, of which Coy and McNichol are members, contributes expertise to the tournament, which attracts hundreds of anglers to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

The MWT and SBWC finance the scholarship as a way of giving back to the sport. McNichol, a sophomore from Richmond, Mich., is minoring in environmental science.

Coy, who is paring her major with a minor in geographical information systems (GIS), is a senior from Petoskey, Mich. She and five other LSSU students presented research Feb 13-14 at the Michigan chapter of the American Fisheries Society’s annual meeting.

The students also shared senior-theses work at the 78th Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference held Jan. 28-31 in Milwaukee, Wis. Joining Coy and McNichol in this picture are, left to right, LSSU Fisheries & Wildlife Club officers Cole VanOosten, Will Marosi, and Riley Waterman.
