A bit of a traffic jam in the St. Marys River

SooToday reader Yvan Besner submitted these photos showing a bit of a traffic jam at the mouth of the St. Marys River near Gros Cap this morning.

Pictured are five vessels waiting for ice breaking operations to allow passage through the channel – the Joyce L Van Enkevort, the Thunder Bay, the CSL Laurentian, the Joe Thompson, and an unidentified cutter.

The U.S. Coast Guard District Sault Ste. Marie reports that cutters Machinaw, Bristol Bay and Biscayne Bay are busy working to minimize traffic disruptions.

"The expansive coverage of ice in the St. Marys River may lead to a disruption of scheduled ferry operations. as the US Coast Guard expects ice to grow rapidly on the St Marys River," states a recent news release issued by the Coast Guard. "The below zero temperatures, lake effect snow, and the continued movement of commercial vessels will fuel the development of ice."
