Person jumps into canal; Sault Michigan police investigating

Sault Michigan Police and Cloverland Electric Cooperative are investigating an incident involving an individual who jumped from the West Portage Avenue Bridge into the Cloverland Co-op power canal at approximately 12:15 p.m. Wednesday.

A Sault, Mich. police sergeant was waved down by a person near the bridge.

Sault, Mich. police say when the officer approached in his vehicle, a person was seen jumping from the bridge into the canal. 

The officer radioed for assistance.

Sault Ste. Marie Police Department officers, Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department firefighters, along with numerous County, State, and Federal emergency responders were deployed on every canal bridge and on the bank of the power canal.

The individual was last seen by a Sault officer just east of the Fort Street Bridge. 

Police say the person rose to the surface then immediately re-submerged. 

The individual was not seen again afterwards. 

The Sault Police Department has been coordinating its efforts with Cloverland Electric over the incident.

The identity of the individual is not known at this time.
