SAULT STE MARIE, MICH. - Ashmun Street – for locals, the name invokes happy memories filled with bustling crowds, cars whizzing by, and lots of late night shopping and dining.

Ashmun Street retailers met a few weeks ago with a goal to bring back some evening excitement. “Ashmun Alive!” – an eight week series of Ashmun-focused events – was born.

“Ashmun Alive!” will take place every Thursday evening starting this week on July 11, and concluding on Aug. 29. The event will feature participating shops staying open until 9 p.m.; music; street performers; vendors; and lots of enthusiasm.

The goal of the event series will be to grow and improve each week. Businesses are planning their own activities; for example, Tara Kelgar of Phat Boutique at 559 Ashmun plans to partner with a face painter, hip hop dancers, hula hoop artist, and a DJ. Neighboring businesses will be open as well; Crooked Music may feature a live band.

A block north, Danna Sanderson at The Foundary (404 Ashmun) will offer popcorn, music, and mascots for photo shoots with kids and families. Other stores open in the area include Barish’s K3 Clothing, Cup of the Day, and more. Harmony Health Foods will be offering a wine tasting at 217 Ashmun.  Expect even more as the weeks progress!
