Const. Monique Baker, media relations with the Sault Ste. Marie OPP detachment, has issued a correction to the news release sent earlier today regarding a fatal ATV rollover in Batchewana First Nation.

The original news release, as submitted to SooToday by the OPP, stated the deceased woman was not wearing a helmet at the time of the rollover.

As a result of numerous emails, phone calls and comments, SooToday reached out to Baker regarding this incident to verify this information.

At 5:25 p.m., Baker issued a corrected news release, which states all three ATV riders were indeed wearing helmets at the time of the rollover.

The original news release, as it ran today on SooToday, is below:

KARS TOWNSHIP, BATCHEWANA FIRST NATION - At approximately 4:20 p.m. on Aug. 4, 2017, Batchewana First Nation Police (BFN) with the assistance of the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Batchewana Fire and Rescue attended the scene of a single all-terrain vehicle (ATV) rollover on an access gravel road at the end of Goulais Mission Road approximately 200 meters west of Cemetery Road on the Batchewana First Nation Territory.

The ATV was westbound on the roadway and entered the south grass line striking a stump causing the ATV to rollover.

The driver was not wearing a helmet at the time of the rollover. There were three persons on a non-passenger single rider ATV.

The deceased driver of the ATV has been identified as 54-year-old Suzanne Ross of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

The two child passengers, a 13-year-old male and a 10-year-old female received minor injuries.

A post mortem has been scheduled for Aug. 8, 2017.
