CHARGES LAID AFTER NEIGHBOUR COMPLAINT

On December 8th, 2003 O.P.P officers were called to a residence in Spanish to investigate a weapon related call. The investigation revealed that the complainant had gone to the residence of the suspect to speak to him.

During their conversation the accused had pointed a firearm at the complainant. Police went to the residence of the suspect and arrested Rolland Joseph LORTIE (55) of Spanish, Ont.

Officers executed a search warrant of the Lortie residence and located firearms and ammunition, which were seized. Rolland Joseph Lortie is charged with Pointing a Firearm and he is scheduled to attend court on January 6th, 2004.


O.P.P. R.I.D.E. CHECKS

General patrol officers from the Sault Ste. Marie O.P.P. detachment as well as the O.P.P. Traffic and Marine Unit teamed up yesterday to conduct R.I.D.E checks at four different locations.

The officers set up the Festive R.I.D.E checks on Hwy 638 in the Village of Batchawana. At this location 45 vehicles travelling in the village were checked but no one was found to have been drinking.

They then set up second spot check on Hwy 17 at Trout Lake Road in Heyden. One person was given a roadside breathalyzer test at this location but they passed the test and were allowed to continue.

The third location where the teams set up was on Church Street in Echo Bay. From there the officers went to the intersection on Government Road and Bar River Road.

The officers set up these random checks starting at 2:30 in the afternoon and the last checks were done at 4:30 in this morning. No charges were laid in these R.I.D.E. checks. Police will continue the Festive R.I.D.E checks at random locations on Hwy 17 as well as the area side roads.
