One Lane Of Hwy 17 Now Open

Sault Ste Marie OPP are still at the scene of a serious crash on Hwy 17, north of Sault Ste Marie, between the bottom of Mile Hill and Pineshores Road.

Officers have opened one lane of Hwy 17 for traffic in both directions. Anyone traveling on Hwy 17 north of Sault Ste Marie should expect delays as traffic filters through one lane.

Police expect that this section of Hwy 17 will be restricted to one lane traffic for many hours.

Crash Closed Highway North Of Soo

Goulais River, Ont.,

OPP from Sault Ste Marie have just arrived at a crash on Hwy 17 , north of Sault Ste Marie, between the bottom of Mile Hill and Pineshores Road.

Initial reports from the scene are indicating that a van and a motorcycle have collided. Fire personnel, ambulance and police are on the scene. There is a report of serious and possibly life threatening injuries.

Motorist traveling southbound in this area should use Hwy 552 East to Hwy 556 and then back to Hwy 17. Motorists traveling north should use Hwy 556 to Hwy 552 East then back to Hwy 17

Traffic Stop Leads to Arrests

On Wednesday the 30th of August 2006 at approximately 1:55 a.m. an officer from the Sault Ste. Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police was on general patrol on Hwy 17 in Laird Twp. At this time he began to follow two vehicles travelling together west bound. Information revealed that the licence plate on the green Pontiac Sunfire was reported stolen from Sudbury on the 28th of August 2006.

The vehicle was stopped and investigation revealed that the male driver did not have a driver’s licence. The driver and two other female occupants were arrested for possession of stolen property and brought to the detachment.

Michael Richards age 24 of Sudbury Ontario will be appearing for bail court this morning to answer to charges under the Criminal Code of Canada for possession of stolen property, breach of probation x 4, operating a motor vehicle with no insurance contrary to the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, and two charges under the Highway Traffic Act for driving under suspension and use plate not authorized.

Sheila Doyle, age 18 of Sudbury Ontario will also be appearing for bail court to answer to charges under the Criminal Code of Canada for possession of marihuana and breaching an undertaking.

The other female was released unconditionally.
