Vehicle forced off highway, impaired charges laid

JOCELYN TOWNSHIP - On Aug. 12, 2017, shortly after 5:30 p.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police responded to traffic complaint involving an impaired driver on 10th Side Road in Jocelyn Township. 

Investigation determined a southbound pickup truck with a lone driver entered the northbound lane on the 10th Side Road and forced a northbound vehicle off the highway. The complainant and the driver of the pickup had pulled over on 10th Side Road.

When speaking to the male driver of the pickup, the officer determined the driver had been consuming alcohol. Further investigation determined the male was a suspended driver.

As a result, John Atkins, 52 years of age from Jocelyn Township, Ontario was charged with;

  • Driving While Ability Impaired-Motor Vehicle, contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
  • Driving with More than 80 milligrams of Alcohol in Blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the CC; and with
  • Drive While Suspended, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

The accused is schedule to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Oct. 5, 2017.
