MISSING PERSON SEARCH RESULTS IN THE DISCOVERY OF A CANNABIS MARIJUANA GROW OPERATION

(Kirkland Lake, ON) On the 31st of May 2005, while searching for a missing person in the Blain Township area southwest of Kirkland Lake, police came upon evidence of a cannabis marijuana growing operation. The subsequent investigation conducted by the Kirkland Lake Detachment of the O.P.P., members of the Emergency Response Team, and members of Project Northern Gateway (an O.P.P. Drug Enforcement Section lead initiative), resulted in the execution of a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrant. As a result of the search police dismantled and seized approximately 4500 cannabis marijuana plants. Also seized was a quantity of cannabis resin, a firearm, gas generators, an earth tiller, several high intensity light bulbs, submersible pumps, hoses, and other miscellaneous equipment related to the growing of marijuana. The cannabis marijuana seized has a potential street value of approximately $4,500,00.00. The offence related property seized has a value of approximately $10,000.00.

Call From Neighbour Help Police Find Culprit

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) At 1:43 a.m. on May 28th, 2005 police received a call to attend the Robertson Road area in regards to a theft from an auto in progress.

The culprit(s) were reported to be fleeing the area. Police stopped a male in the area and investigation revealed that the male had been involved in the theft. Stolen items were recovered.

Charged with the following is Adrian TURCOTTE (18) of Spragge;

Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000.
Possession of Break In Instruments
Operate Vehicle Without Insurance
Permit Use of Plate Not Authorized for Vehicle

TURCOTTE is scheduled to appear in court on July 5th, 2005.
Investigation continuing.

Police Busy With A Rash of Break and Enters

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) The East Algoma OPP – Elliot Lake are investigating several break and enters that occurred in the area of Taylor Boulevard, Gauthier Place and Farrell Crescent. Eight residential home are victims.

The break and enters occurred sometime between May 28th, 2005 5:40 a.m. and May 29th, 2005 6:45 a.m.

Properties stolen are wallets, purses and pension cheques. Some property has been recovered but the money and pension cheques remain outstanding.

Driving Disqualified and More

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) On May 29th, 2005 at approximately 12:05 a.m. while on general patrol an officer noted a vehicle weaving on Hwy 108.

The vehicle was stopped. Investigation revealed the driver had been drinking and an open beer bottle and other beer were located in the vehicle.

Charged with the following is Daniel Gervais GOSSELIN (29) of Blind River.

Drive Disqualified
Having Care and Control of Vehicle with Open Container of Liquor

GOSSELIN is scheduled to appear in court on July 5th, 2005.

Speeding Gets Driver Arrested

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) OPP officers were on general patrol in the early morning of May 30th, 2005 when a vehicle was noticed to be speeding on Hwy 108. Police followed the vehicle and eventually the vehicle was stopped. The driver identified himself and stated he had a curfew due to unrelated charges and was out past his curfew. The officer confirmed this information and the driver was arrested.

Charged with Failing to Comply is Wesley Bruce MAYNES (47) of Elliot Lake.

MAYNES remains in custody awaiting a Bail Hearing.

Local Grocery Store Victim of Theft

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) On May 26th, 2005 police attended a local grocery in regard to a shoplifter. Investigation revealed that a female was observed taking items and placing them in an empty grocery bag. The suspect then attended the cash area and paid for one item then leaving the store without paying for the other items in the bag.

Charged with Theft Under is Shelagh Heather GRANT(42) of Elliot Lake. GRANT is scheduled to appear in court on July 5th, 2005.

Theft of Money from Local Day Care Center

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) The East Algoma OPP – Elliot Lake are currently investigating the theft of money from a local Day Care Center. Investigation revealed that money was taken from a purse of one of the employees and from a locked safe. Amount taken is $510.00.

Money Stolen From Break And Enter

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) On Wednesday, May 25th, 2005 police attended a residence on East Cul de Sac in Elliot Lake in regards to a break and enter report.

Investigation revealed that unknown person(s) entered the residence and stole approximately $300.00 in change.

No other information available at this time. Investigation continuing.

Argument Leads to Many Charges

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) On the evening of May 25th, 2005 the Elliot Lake OPP attended a residence on Dieppe Avenue in regards to a disturbance.

On scene police spoke with a male who approached the officer stating he and his brother had been in an argument.

Investigation revealed that the accused was also breaching conditions on unrelated charges. He was placed under arrest and after being placed in the cruiser the suspect caused damaged to one of the windows of a cruiser. He was then taken to the Elliot Lake Detachment where he assaulted one of the officers by spitting on the officer. Later in the evening the accused damaged one of the cells.

Early Morning Crash Into The Guideposts

Heyden, Ont., A collision early this morning on Hwy 17 north of Sault Ste Marie saw a car crash into the guideposts.

At about 3:30 this morning a 1997 Chevy Cavalier was north bound on Hwy 17 near the intersection of Trout Lake Road in Heyden. The driver left the roadway and crashed into a set of guideposts.

The lone male driver was not injured in the collision. This investigation is still ongoing.
