(Sudbury, ON) Last evening, at approximately 8:50 pm, members of the Espanola OPP responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 17, May Township, east of Massey.

The collision involved an east bound Chrysler Intrepid and a west bound pick-up truck. Raymond RAMSOM, age 69, of Laren Street in Wahnapitae, a passenger in the Intrepid, died as a result of the collision. The three other people involved in the collision were injured and transported to Espanola General Hospital for treatment.

A Technical Traffic Collision Investigator attended and is continuing the investigation.

Hotel Fight Lands Another in Custody

(Blind River, Ont.) On Saturday morning (1204 a.m.) East Algoma O.P.P. were called to the Iron Horse Tavern in response to a fight. When they arrived a suspect was attempting to leave and was arrested by Police before he was able to leave the premises.

A verbal argument turned into a physical fight and after punches were thrown one person used a broken beer bottle to swipe at the second. One patron received a gash to his forearm requiring approximately 30 stitches.

Charged is 41-year-old Bruce Patrick Robitaille of No fixed address.

Robitaille was held in custody for bail court, today, in Sault Ste. Marie on the following charges:

Assault with a weapon, Assault Causing Bodily Harm, Resist Arrest and Causing a disturbance.

Multi-Vehicle Injury Crash – Hwy 69, French River

(Sudbury) Yesterday, Victoria Day, at 3:30 pm, a four vehicle collision occurred on Highway 69, just north of the French River Bridge. Three south bound vehicles collided with a north bound vehicle that had crossed the centre line of the highway.

A Sudbury air ambulance was on scene but was not required. All five injured persons were transported by land ambulance to the St. Joseph Health Centre for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Highway 69 was closed for about 1 ½ hrs while the incident was being investigated, with traffic backed up several kilometers in each direction.

Collision Sends Youth To Hospital

Heyden, Ont., A collision yesterday between a pick up truck and a cyclist resulted in the cyclist being admitted to Sault and Area Hospital.

Yesterday at about 4:00 p.m. the cyclist and a pick up truck pulling a trailer were both southbound on Hwy 556 near Hwy 552. The cyclist turned out in front of the pick up truck and was struck by the truck. The youth was dragged by the truck before it could come to a stop.

The thirteen year old was transported to Sault and Area Hospital by ambulance. He was admitted to hospital with what police believe are major but not life threatening injuries. It is suspected that the youth may have at least one broken leg.

This investigation is still ongoing and charges are pending.

Bear Encounter

Echo Bay, Ont., An Echo Bay resident had a close encounter with a bear over the weekend.

Yesterday at about 9:00 a.m. a Church Street resident notice a bear on the front porch of the house looking into the home. The bear left the porch and was seen wandering in several other yards in the area. One resident reported that sometime over the weekend a bear broke into a shed in the same area of Echo Bay and was rummaging through garbage that was left in the shed.

Yesterday the bear finally wandered away from the area.

Avoiding Animals Caused Extensive Damage

Goulais River, Ont., An attempt to avoid an animal has resulted in extensive damage to a mini van this past weekend.

Yesterday at about noon the mini van was traveling on Blue Water Road in Goulais River when an animal ran into the path of the vehicle.

The driver swerved to avoid the animal. The mini van left the roadway and went into the bush. The vehicle had considerable damage and had to be towed from the scene. No one was injured in this collision and no charges were laid in this investigation.
