WEATHER ATTRIBUTED TO FIVE COLLISIONS

On January 8, 2007 the East Algoma – Thessalon OPP were dispatched to five collisions between 6:00 – 9:00 am during the first snowfall in 2007.

There were no injuries reported in any of the collisions.

The Ontario Provincial Police are advising drivers to slow down and drive according to weather and road conditions.

SCHOOL BUS CRASH ON HAVILLAND SHORES DRIVE IS ONE OF SEVEN CRASHES

Goulais River, Ont.,

There were no reported injuries after a car slid into a school bus on Havilland Shores Drive yesterday.

At about 3:30 p.m. yesterday afternoon, Sault Ste Marie OPP were called to Havilland Shores Drive in Goulais River for the crash involving a car and a school bus. The investigation has revealed that the car was eastbound on Havilland Shores Drive and the school bus was westbound. The car was rounding an uphill curve in the roadway when the car began to slide sideways across the roadway.

The driver of the bus could see the car sliding out of control and was able to get the bus stopped prior to the collision. The car slid into the front drivers side of the bus. There were nine high school students on the bus at the time. There were no injuries reported to anyone involved.

The roadway was icy at the time of the crash. The car had to be towed from the scene and no charges were laid in this investigation.

Sault Ste Marie investigated six other crashes on our area highways over the past 24 hours. There were no reported injuries in any of the other crashes and limited to moderate damage to the involved vehicles. Tow trucks were need in all cases to get the vehicles out of the ditches and back on the roadways.

ONE MALE CHARGED WITH MISCHIEF

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) On January 7, 2007 at approximately 3:48 a.m. police responded to a disturbance call on Mississauga Avenue. On scene the officers discovered two broken windows and witnesses advised police that the suspect had left the area. At this time police obtained a description of the suspect.

A short time later the OPP received another call regarding a male, matching the description of the previous call trespassing and refusing to leave. Police attended the residence on Pountney Place and located the suspect.

Charged with Mischief Under is Lance Brandon CYR (19) of Elliot Lake. CYR is scheduled to appear in court on March 6th, 2007.

POLICE SOLVE NEW YEAR EVE MISCHIEFS

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) The East Algoma OPP has charged a 17-year-old female with several charges involving an orange spray paint can.

On December 31st, 2006, while on general patrol police noted a broken window on Hillside Drive South. Investigation revealed that the suspects responsible for this mischief had left the area and were heading towards the high school. Police located the suspects and noticed the youths had spray-painted the rear of a church. Investigation revealed several mischiefs and discovered the spray paint can had been stolen.

A 17-year-old female youth from Sarnia, Ontario has been charged with one (1) count of Theft Under and four (4) counts of Mischief.

The youth is scheduled to appear in court on March 6th, 2007.

The name of the youth will not be released under the jurisdiction of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Literacy is the Key !!!

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is participating in the second, province-wide Book Drive for Aboriginal Youth Literacy, a project of the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the Honourable James K. Bartleman.

During the month of January, the public will be able to drop off new or gently used books for children or teenagers at any OPP detachment during regular business hours. As the goal of this drive is to provide books for youth, the OPP will not accept books intended for adults, or reference books/materials or magazines.

The drive concludes on January 31, 2007 and no books will be accepted after that date.
