A joint R.I.D.E. check over the New Year’s weekend saw one American citizen loose his licence after being caught drinking and driving.

On Saturday 30 Dec 2006 at about 3:30 a.m. officers with the OPP Traffic and Marine Unit were conducting joint R.I.D.E. checks with the Sault Ste Marie City Police. A male driver came through the R.I.D.E check and showed signs that he had been drinking. He was taken in for further investigation where tests confirmed that he was indeed over the legal limit.

As a result of this investigation twenty one (21) year old Scott VANDERBELT of Portage, Michigan has been charged with one count of Driving While Over the Legal Limit. His Michigan drivers licence has been suspended in Ontario for the next 90 days and he will be required to return to Canada for a court appearance.


EARLY MORNING CRASH RESULTS IN CHARGES

Harmony Beach, Ont.,

A Cambridge man has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act after a crash early this morning.

At about 3:00 a.m. this morning a vehicle was northbound on Hwy 17 near Wolf Lake Road in Harmony Beach. The driver alleges that a southbound vehicle came around the curve encroaching on his side of the roadway. As a result of this action the Cambridge man’s car slid sideways on Hwy 17 and into several guideposts.

An investigation into this crash revealed that the driver did not have a driver’s licence. As a result of this investigation fifty five year old Randy PICKETT of Cambridge Ontario has been charged with Driving With No Licence contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario. No one was injured in the crash but the car had major damage and had to be towed from the scene.


AND AGAIN—RUNNING RADAR FINDS MORE THAN JUST SPEEDERS

Officers with the Sault Ste Marie Detachment once again prove that conducting radar patrols proves that we find more than just speeders.

On Sunday 31 December 2006 at about 11:30 a.m. officers were on Hwy 17 north of Sault Ste Marie in the Havilland Bay area when they clocked a vehicle traveling over the speed limit. The vehicle was pulled over and it was discovered that the driver had no licence because it was suspended.

Twenty one (21) year old Scott Purvis of Atlas Street in Sault Ste Marie has been charged with Driving While Under Suspension Contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario. He will appear in court on 31 January 2007

OPP patrol officers in Sault Ste Marie and Thessalon wish to advise area drivers that all roadways north and east of Sault Ste Marie are very slippery. Highways, side roads and bridges have a coating of black ice on them. Motorists are asked to slow down and drive according to the weather conditions
