Public Assists in Fatality Free Weekend on the Roads

(North East Region, ON) The North East Region Provincial Police Communication Centre receives reports of erratic and impaired drivers every day. This past long weekend, several of those drivers were located as a result of reports from the public.

On Friday, July 30th, at approx. 6:00 p.m. OPP Traffic and Marine Unit arrested Donald DEMORE, 61 of Sudbury, Ontario on Hwy 69, Estaire. DEMORE has been charged criminally with Impaired Driving/Over 80mgs.

Early Saturday morning, Killarney OPP officers attempted to make a traffic stop, where the vehicle continued to a residence driveway before stopping. Michael ROQUE, 44 of Killarney was subsequently arrested and charged criminally for Impaired/Over 80mgs.

As a result of a keen traveler, OPP nabbed another impaired driver on Hwy 69, near Estaire at approximately 10 p.m. Saturday night. A tractor-trailer was reported to OPP weaving across the road and shoulder. OPP officers located the vehicle and the driver, John CHANDLER, 53, of Burlington was charged criminally for Impaired/Over 80 mgs.

OPP received two complaints of an impaired driver at approximately 9:30 a.m., Sunday morning in the town of Little Rapids, north of Thessalon. It was reported that the driver who was displaying signs of impairment, parked his car and went into church. OPP awaited the man’s exit from the church service and arrested him. Charged criminally with Impaired/Over 80 mgs is 72-year-old Vernon MAGUIRE, of Scarborough.

The OPP also received a complaint of an erratic driver on Highway 101 near South Porcupine. The OPP were able to stop the vehicle and charge Gerard Hynes, age 45 of Timmins with Impaired / Over 80mgs.
