MANITOULIN MAN Charged as Accessory and Obstructing Justice in the Death of Mary Ann DAVIS

(Zhiibaahaasing First Nation, Manitoulin Island, Ont.) – Members of the United Chiefs and Council of Manitoulin Anishnaabe Police Service, the Ontario Provincial Police, Manitoulin Detachment and the OPP Northeast Region Crime Unit, are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of 25-year-old Mary Ann Davis, of 340 Sagon Road, Zhiibaahaasing First Nation. Her common law spouse Brent Jeremy KELLS age 21 of 340 Sagon Road, Zhibaahaasing First Nation has been charged with First Degree Murder.

As a result of their investigation, police allege that Robert William KELLS, the father of the accused had obstructed justice. He has been charged with one count of obstruct justice and accessory after the fact to murder. Robert KELLS is to appear in court in Gore Bay on Tuesday April18th, 2006.

A preliminary hearing into the charges against Brent KELLS is scheduled to begin on Monday June 5th, 2006 in the Ontario Court of Justice, Gore Bay.

The investigating officer is Senior Constable Brian Ziegler of the U.C.C.M. Anishnaabe Police Service. The investigation is being conducted under the direction of Detective Inspector Larry Reesor, Criminal Investigation Branch, OPP General Headquarters, Orillia.

ROADS SIGNS VANDALIZED

On Friday 14 Apr 06 at 9:38 am Manitoulin OPP were advised of a number of highway signs that have been knocked over along Hwy 540 and Hwy 542 in Billings Township. It appears that a vehicle had been used to push over the signs using a bumper of the vehicle. Evidence at the scene where tire treads were left appears the vehicle to be a large truck. Police are presently investigating the damage and if anyone has any knowledge or information about these crimes they are asked to call police or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

GARAGE CATCHES FIRE YOUTH CHARGED

On Saturday 15 Apr 06 at 11:19 pm Manitoulin OPP while on patrol observed a large amount of smoke coming from a garage behind a residence on Vankoughnet Street in Little Current. Officers arrived at the same time as the NEMI Fire Dept to find a rear garage of a residence on fire. An investigation was started as to the cause of the fire and it was found that a youth was involved and as a result has been charged with theft of gasoline. Constable Cyndy Ramage is the investigating officer.

BREAK & ENTERS AT BUSINESS IN GORE BAY

Manitoulin OPP are investigating a couple of break & enters into businesses in the Gore Bay area. On April 09th 2006 OPP responded to a report of a break & enter to Charlie’s Shell Gas Station. Culprit(s) entered through a rear window once inside stole a quantity of cigarettes. On the 17th April 06 OPP responded to a report of a business entered Sue’s Clip & Snip shop had been entered and a quantity of cash was stolen. If anyone has any knowledge of these crimes they are asked to call police or crime stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).


FOUND HUMAN REMAINS INVESTIGATION – NOW CALLED A HOMICIDE

(Burwash Twp., On.) On Tuesday, December 27, 2005, officers from the Sudbury OPP Detachment attended at a bush area off of Trout Lake Road in Burwash Township after hunters discovered human remains in the area.

On Thursday, December 29, 2005, the remains were positively identified as Davinder (Daphne) KOCHAR, a Sudbury woman reported missing on November 06, 2005 to the Greater Sudbury Police Service.

A joint police service investigation continues with officers from the Greater Sudbury Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police.

On Sunday, April 16, 2006, a purse and some personal property were located in the Lively area. These items have been identified as belonging to Davinder KOCHAR.

Police in consultation with the Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario have classified this investigation as a homicide. Forensic testing is continuing through the office of the Chief Coroner.

Two Charged With Possession
Possession Charges

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) While investigating another incident, police have charged an 18-year-old male and a 14-year-old male youth with possession.

Charged with Possession of Marihuana is Andrew VINTINNER (18) of Elliot Lake. VINTINNER is scheduled to appear in court June 6th, 2006.

Also charged with Possession of Marihuana is a 14-year-old male and his name will not be released under the direction of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The youth is scheduled to appear in court June 16th, 2006.

Garbage Bin Fire

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) The East Algoma OPP is currently investigating a garbage bin fire. On Friday, April 14, 2006 at approximately 11:00 p.m. police were called to attend the back area of the Elliot Lake Secondary School in regards to a fire. The bin was located right against the school between the school and the municipal pool. The Elliot Lake Fire Department was on scene and quickly extinguished the fire.

Damage was contained to the one garbage bin only.

Names Released From Fatal Collision

(Hagar, ON) Members of Warren OPP Detachment responded to a report of a serious collision on Hwy 17, West of Hagar on Friday April 14th, 2006 at approximately 2:08 p.m.

Brian George TRIMMER, 29, of Powassan and his son Nathan George TRIMMER, 4 month also of Powassan were killed in the motor vehicle collision.

Two other passengers in the Trimmer vehicle were taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Sudbury with serious injuries.

The driver and a passenger from a pickup, which collided with the Trimmer vehicle, were also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

No one was injured in a third vehicle, which was indirectly involved.

The cause of the investigation is still ongoing.

Motorcycle Crash

Echo Bay, Ont.,

A collision between a motorcycle and a pick up truck send the rider of the motorcycle to hospital.

On Sunday 16 April 2006 at about 5:00 p.m. a motorcycle was traveling on Church Street in Echo Bay. The driver of a pick up truck did not see the bike and pulled out of a private driveway into the path of the motorcycle.

The bike struck the truck and the driver of the motorcycle was thrown from the motorcycle and landed on the opposite side of the roadway. The driver was taken to Sault and Area Hospital by ambulance with unknown injuries.

The driver of the pick up truck, thirty two year old Jena FERGUSON, of Echo Bay has been charged with Failing to Yield From a Private Drive, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario. The driver of the motorcycle has been identified as forty nine year old Guy PITRE of Sault Ste Marie.
