Attempted Break Ins

Thieves and would-be thieves were back at work yesterday in the Sault Ste. Marie O.P.P. Detachment area. In the two incidents reported, the thieves were unsuccessful in getting what they were after but the fact that they tried is disconcerting to owners of the property sought.

On Maple Drive in Echo Bay a resident noticed that the car door of a 1989 Toyota parked on the property was open. It appears that someone had entered the vehicle but did not take anything. No damage was done to the car and it does not appear that any effort was made to move it.

A Church street resident was not pleased to find that her storage shed door was open on returning home from work. A check of the shed revealed that a Honda Fourtrax ATV was no longer being stored inside. Tire tracks lead from the front to the rear of the shed. Following this clue led to the discovery of the ATV behind the shed. The ham-fisted wanna-be felon had removed the ignition from the center console and made attempts to start the vehicle with screwdrivers. Some minor damage was done to the ignition switch but it does still work when the proper key is used.

These two incidents are still under investigation. Any information you may have regarding the identity of persons responsible for these two acts would be appreciated by the investigators. If you are somewhat reluctant to speak to police directly then call Crime Stoppers. You will not have to tell the nice folks at Crime Stoppers your name nor will you have to appear in court as a witness. Should your information lead to an arrest you may earn a cash reward. You can contact Crime Stoppers at 942-STOP(7867) or toll free at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477).

Traffic Incident

Some drivers have a habit, when making a left turn, of traveling to the left hand side of the road well in advance of reaching the roadway or private drive they wish to turn into. It may seem a good solution to prevent following traffic from having to wait for the turn to be made but it does present other hazards.

At about 6:45 P.M. last night an eastbound car traveling along Highway 17 in Garden River was approaching the intersection of Hiawatha Drive. The driver wished to make a left turn onto Hiawatha Drive. At the same time another motorist had brought her car to a stop on Hiawatha Drive waiting to make a right turn onto Highway 17. The driver of the eastbound car had brought her vehicle to the left side of Highway 17 and was onto the shoulder of the roadway in anticipation of turning onto Hiawatha. Alas the turn never quite took place. The eastbound left turning car was in collision with the stationary right turning car already on Hiawatha Drive.

The driver of the eastbound car Ronny Ann THIBAULT, 22, of Garden River has been ticketed for making an Improper Left Turn.
