MANITOULIN ISLAND WOMAN INJURED BY BEAR
Ice Lake, Ont.

Yesterday evening at 10:10, an 81-year-old woman of Highway 540 near Gore Bay on Manitoulin Island let her dog out for a run. The dog approached a bear that was eating apples off a tree on her property. The bear chased the dog into the garage where the woman was waiting.

The bear knocked her down but she held onto it so she could protect her dog and while doing so she attempted to punch the bear to scare it off. The woman received some claw marks to her chest and upper thigh. She was taken to Mindemoya Hospital for observations due to her age.

Manitoulin O.P.P. attempted to find the bear with no results. They have set two bear traps on her property. The woman was interviewed by police who said she was in good spirits and feisty and promises to leave bear fighting to police in the future.
