13 YEAR OLD CHARGED IN VANDALIZM TO BATCHAWAN CAMP

Batchawana, Ont.,

A 13 year old Batchawana youth has been charged after a break in to a seasonal home on Getchell Rd in Batchawana resulted in $13,000.00 in damage.

On 07 Sept 2003 a canoeist was paddling near the shore of Lake Superior when he heard noise at a camp. He knew that the owners were not there so he went to check the camp out. When he arrived at the camp he found the camp virtually destroyed.

The vandals had smashed every window in the building. All the furniture had been overturned and someone unsuccessfully tried to start a fire in the cushion of a chair. All the food products were strewn about the home. Electronic equipment was removed from the house and smashed on the outside decks. The boathouse was entered and all oils and other chemicals were thrown about the boathouse. Evidence of another unsuccessful fire was located on the dock. Every light bulb on the exterior of the home was smashed. The fire extinguisher and propane tanks were purposely emptied.

Two other youths were involved in the break and enter but according the Youth Justice Intervention Act they are too young to be charged. The 13 year old has been charged with Break Enter and Theft and Break Enter and Mischief. He will appear in Youth court in late October
