Mamainse Harbour, Ont, Sault Ste Marie OPP were dispatched to a single vehicle collision on Hwy 17 just north of Mamaince Harbour yesterday afternoon.

At about 4:00 p.m. a northbound pick up truck went onto the shoulder of the roadway, lost control and ended up on its side in the ditch. The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle. She was not injured and a tow truck was needed to remove the truck. Weather conditions did play a significant part in the collision.

Echo Bay, Ont., Officers were sent to the start of the four lane section of Hwy 17 in Echo Bay yesterday after receiving a report of a vehicle upside down in the ditch.

Investigation has indicated that a pick up truck was traveling west on Hwy 17 when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The truck spun around on the roadway and ended up on its roof in the ditch. The driver was not injured in this collision.


More Trees And Wires Down

Garden River, Ont., OPP were called to Hwy 17 on the Garden River First Nation Territory after fallen trees and hydro wires fell across the Hwy.

At about 11:00 p.m. last night, high winds blew over a large tree onto hydro wires. The tree and wires were blocking most of Hwy 17. Officers had to close the Hwy 17 for about 1-½ hours until hydro where able to clear the hazard.

Police Officers Past and Present Training Gets Put To Use

Sault Ste Marie, Ont., An officer with the Explosive Disposal Unit of the OPP stationed in Sault Ste Marie was able to put his past and present first aid training to use yesterday.

Prov. Const Dale Burns, of the Explosive Disposal Unit, was on duty and having lunch yesterday at a restaurant in the west end of Sault Ste Marie. He noticed an elderly man having difficulty breathing and quickly determined that he was choking on a piece of food.

Cst Burns was a paramedic prior to becoming a police officer and has received first aid training from both occupations. Cst Burns quickly determined that the man needed immediate medical assistance performed the Heimlich Maneuver on the chocking man. The officer was successful in dislodging the obstruction in the man throat.
