High Winds Cause Damage

Goulais River, Ont., It appears the Goulais River area took the brunt of the damage caused by high winds yesterday.

Yesterday morning at about 7:00 a.m. Sault Ste Marie OPP received two reports of trees blocks side roads in the Goulais River area. Havilland Shores Drive and Hwy 552 West both had trees blow down across the roadways. MTO work crews were able to clear the roadways.

At 4:00 p.m. OPP, fire and hydro officials responded to a report of downed hydro wires and fire beside Hwy 17 in Batchawana. It appeared that a fallen tree snapped the wires and a small fire started in the area. The fire was extinguished and Hydro officials attended to the live line.

Between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. last night, Sault OPP officers responded to four different reports of tree and/or wires blocking the roadway on Hwy 552 West, Young Road, Harmony Beach Road and Hwy 552 East. MTO and hydro crews were able to stabilize the situations. As of this morning Sault OPP have received no reports of any injuries or damage to any homes in the area.
