Two Collisions With Animals

Sault Ste Marie, Ont.,

Some of the latest research into the cause of collisions has indicated that across Canada there is a crash involving some type of an animal every minute of every hour every day.

Yesterday two large animals were killed within the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment area within 15 minutes of each other. At about 7:15 a.m. yesterday morning a transport traveling on Hwy 17, east of Sault Ste Marie, struck and killed a deer. There was minimal damage to the truck and no occupants of the rig were injured.

Again, at about 7:30 a.m. yesterday morning, a transport was traveling northbound on Hwy 17 in the Batchawana area. A bear ran in front of the truck and the animal was killed. Once again the truck had minor damage and no one was injured.

May and June are two of the months where collisions with animals increase in frequency. Always be scanning the shoulder and tree line for both big and small animals. Be prepared to take the necessary actions in an attempt to avoid a crash with larger animals.
