Thessalon man charged with impaired driving after vehicle hits building

A news release issued today by the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reports that a Thessalon driver has been charged with impaired driving following a collision in Iron Bridge.

Officers responded to the scene early Wednesday afternoon to find that a vehicle had veered off Highway 17, causing minor damage to a building in the area.

Full text of the news release issued by the OPP follows:

MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES - On Oct. 7, 2020 shortly after 12:15 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 in the Town of Iron Bridge.

Investigation determined a vehicle left the roadway causing minor damage to a building. Officers arrived on scene and spoke to the driver. Officer determined the driver had consumed alcohol.

As a result of the investigation, Clifford McKeacknie, age 58 from Thessalon, was charged with:
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC.

The driver was issued a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension (ADLS) and the motor vehicle was impounded for seven days.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Dec. 3, 2020.
