Sault OPP lay sexual assault charges after incident north of city

Canine unit, crisis negotiators and forensics on scene at Havilland Bay most of the day

HAVILLAND TOWNSHIP – An incident north of the city that resulted in a large police presence for most of the day has ended with an arrest, police say.

Ontario Provincial Police say one person is facing numerous charges after a domestic disturbance at a seasonal residence in the Havilland Bay area.

Shortly before 6 a.m., the Sault Ste. Marie OPP responded to a report of an assault on Havilland Shores Drive in Havilland Township, the OPP said in a release.

Sault OPP were assisted by the North East Region OPP emergency response team, tactics and rescue unit and canine unit, as well as crisis negotiators.

Also on scene were the Sault OPP's forensic identification unit, and the Sault, East Algoma and Manitoulin OPP crime units.

Police said Sunday night that a 27-year-old from Sault Ste. Marie was arrested and charged with:

  • Sexual Assault - two counts
  • Assault - Spousal
  • Assault with a Weapon - Spousal
  • Dangerous Operation
  • Careless use of Firearm
  • Careless Storage of Firearm
  • Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Mischief Under $5,000

The accused was remanded into custody, pending a bail hearing, police said.

Police said due to the domestic nature of the incident, the name of the accused will not be released to protect the identity of the victim or victims.
