A transport driver tried to avoid hitting a moose on Highway 17 near Batchawana early yesterday morning and ended up in the ditch.

The driver, from Shelbourne Quebec, was not injured. The truck was carrying a load of cars but the only damage appears to be to the transport.

The accident occurred at 5 :45 a.m. The investigation is continuing.


FIFTH CHARGED IN BEATING

Wayne Hewitt, 35, of Heyden is the latest person to be charged in connection with last weekend's savage beating of Henry Johnston.

Hewitt is charged yesterday with counselling to commit aggravated assault, endangering life, and accessory after the fact of aggravated assault.

Previously charged with aggravated assault with a weapon endangering life were Shane Mollari, 19 and Dustin Rodrique Gagne, 18, both of Heyden, as well as two young persons who cannot be identified.

Johnston remains in intensive care in Sudbury.

He was found unconscious in a small woodlot his house in Heyden last Sunday.
